  • Find products specifically for your eyes to protect the sensitive skin around them.
  • Understand the right products for your eyes by learning what the best active ingredients are.
  • Use fascial release methods before applying your eye cream of choice.

Not all skin across your body is the same! Different types of skin cells grow across areas such as your palms, around your face, the bottom of your feet, and the sensitive skin around the eyes. Today, I want to focus on that all-important eye area. It is a sensitive part of your body, that when treated right, can stay resilient for longer without bagginess or wrinkles. When my clients ask about the skin around their eyes, I start the conversation off by letting them know they can’t use typical skincare products around their eyes. So what should be used and why?

Seeing What’s Special About Eyes

The skin around your eyes is much thinner than the skin around the rest of your face, making it much more delicate. It doesn’t contain as many of the sebaceous glands that help to protect your skin. These glands live around hair follicles and secrete an oily sebum that stops your skin from drying out, keeping it more elastic and healthy. Dryness is an enemy of the healthy longevity of your skin.

Not only does the skin around your eyes not have these glands, but they are also attached more loosely to your facial muscles, meaning the skin can be pulled and stretched more easily and they don’t have the backup reinforcement of the typical fatty tissues found on other parts of your face. Altogether, the delicate constitution and lack of structure for the skin around your eyes is what can lead to the early development of eye bags, crow’s feet, and discoloration in a very visible portion of the face.

Trending Ingredients for Eye Skincare

Start by finding an eye cream with the right ingredients to moisturize, reinforce, and protect the skin around your eyes.

Retinol

C. Tox Retinol Eye Cream

Retinol is my hero, especially when it comes to eye skincare. Retinol helps to unclog your pores, exfoliating the skin while simultaneously increasing collagen production. It leaves your skin with a reduced appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and gives it more of a plump, fresh look. My favorite product specifically created for the eyes is the Dr. Esthe C. Tox Retinol Eye Cream, which contains a couple of this amazing Korean company’s own patented ingredients for extra work against eye bags — plus retinol to keep that skin healthy.

PLLA- Facial Filling

HOP+ Promoter Repair Eye and Lip Cream

PLLA, or poly-L-lactic acid, is a relatively new compound to the skincare scene, but it has been taking it by storm. The compound can be used in many different treatment applications. As a topical product, it primarily works by stimulating the production of collagen. The more collagen your skin produces, the tighter and younger it looks. The House of PLLA, a Korean skincare line, is working to harness the power of PLLA and has put the compound into their HOP+ Eye & Lip Cream. They have also created an extract called ‘volufiline’ to give the cream the ability to ‘fill’ skin, giving your skin more volume and smoothing out fine lines.

Peptides

CBE Botanicals Pack Your Bags Anti-Puff Eye Gel

Peptides are protein fragments, constructions of amino acids, that are essential for your skin to function. Without peptides and proteins, your skin loses its firmness and ability to heal itself! Peptides applied correctly can help keep the skin where it should be while also reviving aging skin by helping to teach the cells how to revitalize themselves at the core. Harness peptides with the right mix of ingredients — and I don’t think many other products do it as well as CBE Botanicals Anti-Puff Eye Gel. It uses a cooling gel with an easy-application roll to treat puffiness and a mixture of peptides to get into the skin and encourage long-term smoothness and elasticity.

Sodium Hyaluronate Butyrate

Sodium hyaluronate butyrate is a combination of butyric and hyaluronic acids that are biologically active. They work together to revitalize the epidermis layer of the skin through deep hydration, prevent damage to the skin by UV rays, and promote skin elasticity. When you use the Neogenesis Eye Serum, you not only get all of those benefits, but also the specialized NeoGenesis technology that offers additional proteins to treat your skin.

Best Practices for Applying Eye Products

You now have my top list of ingredients to look out for in your eye creams and some excellent products to look out for while shopping. Now, you can level up your eye skincare by focusing not just on the products you use, but how you use them! Gentle application without pulling at the skin under your eyes can help to keep them looking fresh for longer.

I also love treatments like microcurrent to lift the eyes. For example, using microcurrent can lift the forehead muscles, and therefore the skin on your forehead. Lifting the forehead muscle (the frontalis) helps lift the brow muscles. This opens up the look of your eyes. Try these methods at home using my guide to having bigger and more awake-looking eyes.

Applying your products right isn’t the only way to combat droopy, baggy eyes. You can also use fascia release methods or dramatic, short-term changes and stabilizing long-term changes to facial structure. They actually make the biggest changes if you use them right before applying your eye cream. For instance, do you want a quick pick-me-up for your eyes before heading out for the night or before a big meeting? I’ve got a video on combating droopy eyes with just your fingertips that you can do in minutes.
